In 1961, amid all the excitement of the Jaguar E-Type launch, the Daily Mail newspaper ran a competition to win one of two examples. It is difficult to appreciate now the impact of the E-Type in those days. The vast majority were exported but those few that remained in the UK would be mobbed. This car, Chassis 850024 was manufactured on the 17th May 1961 and distributed through Henly’s London on the 14th July 1961 to Associated Newspapers, Fleet Street, London. Finished in Opalescent Gun Metal, a colour popular with early cars and registered 303 CXR.
The competition was won by a Mr Marcus Girvan, a 20 year old from Southport, Lancashire. After a stint at Henly’s London, the car was delivered to Mr Girvan with the first year of tax and insurance payed for. The E-Type was later exported to South Africa and returned to the UK in 1998, where upon its arrival retained the registration LAS 711, an age related plate by the DVLA.
The car has been subject to a full nut and bolt restoration by our team here at CMC. As ever, we meticulously restored the car where needed whilst retaining as much originality as possible. A 1,750 hour restoration resulted in the car being taken back to original specification.
Completed in 2014.
